The Half Moon Photography Workshop

The Half Moon Photography Workshop (HMPW) was formed in 1975 when Jo Spence and Terry Dennett joined with the radical Half Moon Gallery in East London. Pioneers of socially engaged, participatory photography, they challenged mainstream documentary practices by supporting photography as a political tool for communities.

HMPW ran workshops, community darkrooms, and touring exhibitions in everyday venues, making photography accessible outside traditional institutions. They also published Camerawork magazine, which became central to debates about photography’s social role. Over ten years, HMPW helped shape UK photography as a collective force for activism and change.

Today, Four Corners Gallery draws on this archive to create exhibitions
that connect past and present, showing how these themes remain
urgent and inspiring now.
